Now THIS is how you do blonde highlights…
06/15/10 3:21PMBrunettes, take note: if you want to go blonde, this is the way to do it. Teen sensation (and bubbly brunette) Demi Lovato took to her Twitter page earlier today to post this pic of her new light locks, just in time for the summer. She keeps her natural color while adding just a little bit of contrast, and the results are just stunning. Demi looks like she just got back from the beach, and this new shade brings out her natural glow. I’m mildly obsessed. In fact, I’m considering taking a page out of this starlett’s book and copying her new ‘do. Take a look for yourself:

When it rains, it pours
05/11/10 5:41PMRainy days are my least favorite. It’s not the puddles of water that I have to jump over or splash through to cross the road, and it’s not really about yucky leaves that stick to the ground and make it more slick than normal. No, my least favorite part of rainy days is the number that the weather does on my hair. Sometimes I get poured on and my hair looks like I just stepped out of the shower (more like a sopping wet doggy, actually). Other times, the humidity and moisture ruins anything I possibly attempted to do with my hair in the morning. Today, for example, I straightened my hair in the morning. Within a few minutes of stepping outside, it was wavy, misbehaving and unkempt. Definitely not how I wanted to start my day.
But I think I’ve recently discovered the secret to conquering rainy hair days, and surprisingly it doesn’t involve any fancy products or tools. When it has rained lately…I french braid. This cute ‘do is not only super practical, but it’s becoming super-chic! Case in point: stars like Lauren Conrad rarely leave the house without some sort of braid in their hair. And when you know how to french braid your own hair, it’s super easy and quite impressive. This article has a great step-by-step guide that includes detailed pictures of the process. I like to think of french braiding as a simple “drop and scoop” procedure, so keep that in mind while you style; when you take a piece of hair to braid, always make sure you’re scooping in more hair to add to the braid!
So give it a try the next time it rains. You’re guaranteed to hate rainy days a lot less, and you’ll be able to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at you (while you look fabulous throughout the entire day, I might add)!
Worth a watch: “Good Hair” with Chris Rock
05/10/10 12:53PMI used to joke that my hair decided if I was going to have a good night or not. Still, I never went so far as to put extensions on lay away! “Good Hair” a documentary with comedian Chris Rock, is the controversial peek at just how far African American women go to get that shiny, silky, straight look. I guarantee you will laugh…and learn.
Carousel gets to the Root of STRONG, Shiny Hair
04/13/10 3:17PMGrowing your hair out? I am. I also use hot tools almost daily, highlight every couple months and (I hate to admit) brush my hair when it’s wet. Let’s face it, we don’t always have the time to gently comb wet strands, air dry or blow our hair out with a round brush.
The good news is by incorporating certain foods into our diet, we can still have strong, shiny hair that doesn’t start resembling horse fodder as it grows past shoulder length. Without sacrificing our daily styling regime!
Remember, hair is made up from proteins broken down from the food we eat so it makes sense to eat lean meat such as chicken, fish, shrimp and scallops. Beans and soy products are also great.
Spice it up! I love adding a little heat to my dishes, and as luck would have it spices like cumin, turmeric and cayenne stimulate follicle growth and counteract free radicals.
Completing the trifecta are vitamins. Specifically vitamins B & E. B vitamins promote growth and can be found in spinach, walnuts, blackberries…BEER (yes!), oranges and brown rice. Eat avocados, peanut butter, tomato sauce and of course, greens for a daily dose of Vitamin E.
For the most part we’ve read about these ingredients before, as part of a healthy lifestyle or to promote great skin. It’s not rocket science! And, I’ll try to remember that next time I’m deciding between pizza and spicy Thai.
Summer-Proof Your Hair!
03/24/10 6:28PMWith spring and summer right around the corner, that means warm weather, long days outside…and lots of summer stress on your hair! Thankfully, we have some great tips for you that will help keep your hair safe and gorgeous throughout the summer months. Read on!
The dry and hot summer months tend to do a lot of damage on hair, so it’s important to keep your hair hydrated and moisturized, as well as monitor your use of products that could further dry out your hair. Any kind of conditioner or leave-in product whose main function is to put moisture back into your hair is a great buy. I’m a personal fan of Herbal Essences’ moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Used religiously, it has made my hair shiny and healthy, as well as kept it from drying out and getting frizzy in the heat. Another important consideration is your use of hot hairstyling products like blow dryers, curling irons and flat irons. If you use them every single day (like yours truly!), it’s a good idea to give your hair a rest at least a few times a week. Instead of styling your hair, try this on-the-go, easy technique: braid your still-wet hair before you go to bed; when you wake up in the morning, you’ll have gorgeously styled and beach-inspired waves!
In addition, take care to ensure that you’re hair doesn’t receive too much direct sunlight, which had a drying effect and can also fade your hair if it’s colored. Try a classy and fabulous wide-brimmed sun hat that looks good and protects your hair at the same time. Just remember, summer months can be fun as long as you take care of yourself and protect your gorgeous and luscious hair
