HIGHLIGHTS

…experiencing a string of great hair days. I’m convinced that life is the sweetest when you’re really happy, and there’s something innately comforting and uplifting about having everything just fall into place-literally! Here’s to hoping my streak of fabulous hair days doesn’t crash and burn anytime soon.

Wishing all you fabulous readers the best hair days you could ask for!

I rarely leave the house without hair accessories, be they clips, pins, headbands or the occasional pair of sunglasses on my head. In fact, it’s safe to say I’m obsessed with hair accessories. As a child, I had containers full of hair bows, ribbons, decorative pins, colorful clips and headbands that sported every hue of the rainbow-and beyond. As I’ve grown up, I’ve abandoned some childhood familiarities. For example, I no longer sport ribbons and bows in my hair, and the colors of my hairpins and clips are more subtle to blend into my hair. But one constant that I refuse to eradicate is my love of the headband.

I own close to 20 headbands that I wear on a regular basis. They vary is size, color and ornateness; and recently, I’ve begun to venture into the realm of patterns. Headbands are a quick and simple way to touch up my hair on a day when I’m not feeling too hot about my look. They are the perfect accessory to compliment your outfit for a night out on the town; and on the days when I feel like my wardrobe isn’t making too much of a statement, my headbands add a splash of color and fun to my ensemble.

For a while, I bought simple colored bands that would blend with my hair color. However, the newer styles of headbands were too irresistible to pass up, and I started purchasing headbands with bows on them. From there came ornate decorations, like gems and crystals, and finally came the bold and beautiful patterns that I use to spice up plain colors. No longer are headbands for little girls to pop on their heads before they hit the swing set; headbands are becoming a mature and classy addition to your wardrobe and hairstyles.

My favorite headbands come from one of two stores: Forever 21 or J.Crew. These stores supply the most versatile styles and designs at good prices. The headbands are attractive, comfortable and definitely good quality. So if you’ve yet to try on one of the new, stylish bands, what are you waiting for? You’ll love the new style of your hair with a headband in it, and I guarantee the perfect band will spruce up any outfit.

Bangin’ Bangs

11/03/10 11:10PM

Ever needed a quick bang trim but don’t want to schedule a hair appointment for such a small procedure? Sure you have! If you have bangs, you know that those little puppies require regular maintenance that doesn’t necessarily coincide with the rest of your hair’s schedule. Don’t worry, though!

I’ve had bangs for over eight years now, and while they’ve varied in style and frame, they’ve definitely been a staple in my hairstyles. I just like the way bangs look with my face structure (I’m 100% Polish and thus have a heart-shaped face), and I think they add a little splash of style and flair to my hair. But obviously, to keep them at the right shape and length, I have to make sure they’re regularly trimmed. Instead of making a hair appointment (and paying money!!) for such a simple task, I’ve undertaken the process of trimming my own bangs. And you know what? It’s super easy, inexpensive and best of all, with these simple tricks, they look amazing!

For side-swept bangs, pull all of your bangs forward over your eyes. Then, angle them in the opposite direction as the one in which you part your hair (so if your bangs sit on the right side of your face, pull them to the left). You’ll need thin hair-trimming scissors to make the perfect cut, so once you have those, trim away. I usually cut straight across my bangs-since I pull them off to the side, they’re already angled; thus, making a cut straight across the pulled-to-the-side-bangs won’t change the shape.

To get straight-across bangs that lie flat on your forehead, make sure all the hair is even across the crown of your head, and pull it down over your eyes. Gently cut straight across, without pulling your hair to one side or angling it. So simple!

A few points to remember:
-make absolute sure your hair is dry! When bangs are wet, we tend to cut them to the length at which we want them; however, once hair dries and gets some body, the bangs always end up being shorter. So make sure they’re dry and you’ll get the perfect length!
-to get a perfectly even trim, I use a strip of tape and lay it across my bang “boundary”-that is, the length at which I want it. The tape sticks to hair and provides a rule of sorts that makes sure you get the cut right where you want it!
-never, ever try to engage in this process without a mirror. You will NOT get it right. Go slowly, and make sure that your steady hand is following the exact path you want to your bangs to follow.

Doing quick trims on your bangs can actually be easy and free; just make sure you’re careful, totally focused and in possession of the right tools (don’t worry, this broke college student easily afforded a pair of shearing scissors for hair!). I’ll admit, I’ve perfected the art of bang-trimming to the point where I recently started trimming the tips of my hair to take care of split ends and save some money! Tips on that will come later, but for now, just try your bangs. And as always, remember that if you have a slip-up, hair does grow back! Rock your style and you’re sure to shine.

I recently frequented the local pharmacy to purchase some more shampoo and conditioner. I was running low and wanted to make sure I didn’t have to deal with the awkward realization that, mid-shower, I was out of both necessary products. So after class , I made a quick pit-stop on the way home. Like usual, I made my way directly to the hair care aisle with a particular product in mind. Thanks to a good friend (props to Kim!), I had one particular product in mind…okay, her hair smelled really nice one day, and I was dying to try the combo and achieve the same desired effect. However, this day proved to be a bust in terms of hair care products, because as I bent down to reach for the shampoo and conditioner, I realized that there was only conditioner left. That’s right, the shampoo was out of stock, and staring at me in a taunting fashion from the shelf were a few bottles of conditioner.

I’m not going to lie, I was really upset by this development; and the more I think about it, the more bitter I get. I ended up settling for a brand with which I’m familiar and of which I’m a fan, but let’s be honest: I really wanted that amazing-smelling set. Clearly, this incident had somewhat of an impact on me if I’m still thinking about it. So here’s what I decided.

Buy smart, ladies. For real, who purchases the shampoo and not the conditioner?? We’re talking like, there were about five bottles of conditioner left and zero shampoo…which means that quite a few women decided that their hair was just too perfect to bother with conditioning. Either that or they’re not aware that conditioner is actually really good for your hair and should be used regularly.

Whatever the motive to purchase one and not the other is, though, let’s lay this on the table: buy the shampoo AND the conditioner. If you’re not using both, you really should be in order to get the most healthy and fabulous-looking hair possible. Also, a lot of stores offer “buy one, get one…” discounts, so it ends up being economically smart to pick up the set. Finally, you’re saving a lot of women from the disappointment that they face when they are forced to make an alternate shampoo/conditioner purchase. It’s like finding the perfect bathing suit top only to realize that all the bottoms were purchased. Well, there goes your fabulous swimwear set. Same thing happens with hair-obsessed women like myself run into a debacle at the pharmacy.

Bottom line: it was such a tease to see the shiny bottles of conditioner staring at me. I knew I couldn’t get one without the other, and I knew that I couldn’t wait until the store restocked to make my purchase. What a smack in the face! I left the pharmacy, my bags a little heavier and my heart a little crushed. So let’s help each other out and prevent incidences like this from occurring again. Shampoo and conditioner are a set, like peanut butter and jelly, so don’t be “that girl”…buy both!

About a month ago, we posted pics about Harry Potter star Emma Watson’s new chopped ‘do. Well, she’s not the only celeb to cut off her locks. Keira Knightley recently debuted her short pixie, and it looks absolutely fabulous.

http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2010/10/guess-which-star-got-the-chice.html

Keira Knightley is another one of those starletts with whom I’m fascinated. Her awards show clothing as well as her everyday style are amazing; her makeup always looks phenomenal (as if she even has to wear any–she’s absolutely gorgeous!); and her she’s a risk-taker when it comes to her hairstyles. That’s why I’m happy she’s followed suit and decided to switch up her look. While she’s previously sported long, wavy locks, this short cut really shows off her prime bone structure and frames her face nicely. And the color is fantastic. The warm brown scattered with hints of blonde (in just the right light) screams “fall,” and her always-healthy hair is looking as shiny and soft as ever.

Kudos, Keira, on another rocking hair style!

Fall Into Great Color!

Happy October, everyone! Fall is officially upon us–the temperature here has finally dropped, the days are getting shorter, and I’ve never seen people pull out boots and sweaters faster. A new season is definitely rearing it’s little head, and that can only mean one thing: change.

I’m sure you’re wondering what you can possibly do with your hair to represent the new yet chilly season. After all, lighter hair colors and highlights are generally associated with warmer months, and it’s no secret that many like to go darker for the cooler seasons. So why not try just that? Going dark is a great way to change up your entire appearance and get into a cool, fall mindset. Even taking your shade up one notch can make a big difference!

And if you’re already sporting dark locks? Try adding a dash of color. A faint plum color always looks great on dark hair; plus, plum is a must-have color in fall fashions this season, so there’s no harm in rocking the shade in your hair! Adding some red to your hair is also another great fall trend, one that I’ve personally adopted on numerous occasions. Red is definitely a shade that anyone can rock, and it looks fantastic with the classic fall colors.

Fall really is about change, and what better way to mix it up a little than to adopt a new color for your hair? Let us know what color YOU are going to try this season at info@carouselstrands.com.

Embrace your waves!

09/17/10 6:41PM

Starting my fourth (and final) year in college has really put some thing into perspective for me: first off, that my contemporaries put way more effort into going out on a Friday night than they do for a day of class or meetings with professors. Second, that style always trumps sensibility in young adults. And finally, that most women will spend an insane amount of time fighting the wave and turning their bouncy locks stick straight each day and night.

I won’t lie, I’ve spent a lot of money and a lot of time trying to fight my natural waves. But within the past year, I’ve started to accept the fact that no matter how hot I make my flat iron, or how much straightening product I use, my hair will always have a will of its own and revert back to its natural form.

Seeing girls with straight, thin hair on campus makes me a little jealous. They can leave their hair free-flowing and breezy without it taking over their face. They have the cutest ponytails, and don’t even get me started on how glamorous their hair-tosses are. But straight hair has a downside: straight hair won’t curl very well, so it would be pretty difficult for a gal to change up her style. It lacks the versatility of curly hair, which can be styled (fairly successfully, I might add, in a variety of ways). And straight hair tends to be thinner than curly hair; which means that as we get older and our hair thins more, thick-haired ladies will notice less of a loss than thinner chicks.

Happy curling!

Okay, so before I start, I have to admit that this is a pretty random article coinciding with a pretty random thought that popped into my head while I was tweeting. So, I stumbled on a Cosmpolitan.com article that reveals what men think about women’s hair, makeup, scents, clothes…everything that we consider uniquely “female.”

I tweeted the link and started thinking hard about the social implications that an article like this creates; because aren’t things that we consider an extension of ourselves and our personalities (hair and fashion, for example) supposed to be for us? Aren’t they supposed to be free from scrutiny and judgement?

We keep stressing the importance of being comfortable in your own skin (and hair!) and doing what makes you truly happy. Every hair care tip and styling suggestion is something for you, our lovely readers, to take into consideration when finding a look that truly suits your personality, your structure, your comfort level and ultimately, your confidence. We don’t consider long hair “sexier” than sorter hair, nor do we claim that blondes are better than brunettes-or vice versa. It’s all about you and what makes you personally happy and confident. So I get a little bit confused when I read tidbits of Cosmopolitan’s “wisdom” that seem to advocate adopting what someone else finds attractive. We as women get so many conflicting messages thrown at us: for example, we’re told that we have to believe we’re beautiful no matter what (now, whether or nor we actually believe that is another discussion entirely). Then, we’re bombarded with messages about what men find sexy, followed by tips and tricks on how to embody the look. Confused yet? I sure am, because I thought that it’s my confidence and personality that I want a potential significant other to see, not how long or shiny my hair is.

I guess to sum it up, I’ve always believed that someone who chases after looks alone is shallow and that I didn’t want to spend my time with someone who can’t see the whole picture. Thus, articles like the Cosmopolitan poll are switching up my thought process a little by encouraging me to consider what other people find attractive. So guys think long hair is sexier than short hair: does that mean I’m not as attractive to men as I could be, because my hair doesn’t go past my shoulders? But wait, I’m not supposed to grow it out if I like my hair short, because I have to be true to myself and show off confidence and personality with a shorter ‘do? Whew, a girl could get a headache following this circle around and around!

What do YOU think, readers? Am I getting the messages mixed up in my mind, or is there a chance that we are actually being fed the idea that we’re beautiful-unless we possess features and styles that aren’t favored by the opposite sex? Weigh in and email me at info@carouselstrands.com…I’d love to hear what you think!

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson (for those you living under a rock for the past decade, she plays Harry’s brainy yet brave sidekick, Hermione Granger) was spotted last weekend sporting a very un-Hermione, extremely short pixie cut. Think “girl from the new iPhone commercial” short. Celebrity and fashion bloggers were immediately covering this new switch, and the result is in: Watson’s pixie ‘do is definitely a winner. Not only does she have the bone structure to pull off a short look like this, but she’s got the swagger and the high-fashion confidence that allows her to rock any cut and color we’ve seen on the young actress since she hit the big screen.

http://www.wwtdd.com/2010/08/friday-morning-headlines-10/

Emma’s new look isn’t just about a short cut, though. True, rumors are swirling that she chopped her locks in order to show director David Fincher that she’s seriously considering a role in his upcoming flick, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (based on the book by the same title). Whatever Watson’s reasons are, though, she’s really started something fresh and new in a world dominated by long hair as a security blanket behind which many women are hiding. Let’s be honest, long hair isn’t easier to style or maintain, and it’s not a “no-fuss” look that many women say they’re looking for when they plop down into the hair stylist’s chair. In fact, having had both long and short hair, I can tell you which one is a lot less of a burden–and cheaper. I mean, hello, do you know how much more shampoo and conditioner we go through with longer hair?!? So yeah, shorter hair is definitely easier to upkeep and style. But more than that, short hair shows off a kind of confidence that long hair tends to hide. Emma Watson’s hair isn’t just shorter–it’s REALLY short, exposing every contour and facet of her facial and shoulder structure. Most women, who aren’t too happy with their bone or face structure, tend to use longer hair to hide behind and cover up, say, ears that they were teased about in second grade or a cheekbone structure that doesn’t rival that of celebs they see on the red carpet.

But thankfully, mega-celebs like Emma Watson, Hayden Panettiere and Selma Blair have started somewhat of a hair revolution, showing that short hair can be sexy and exudes a lot more confidence than locks that cover one’s face. They are really showing that taking risks with hairstyles can be a fresh, fun approach to tackling new challenges, and in Watson’s case, can really get positive feedback from an industry that generally conforms to one standardized ideal of “beauty.”

And I’m jealous, really, because all I can think about now is how much earlier Emma Watson gets to start her day while the rest of us spend upwards of 30 minutes drying and styling our long locks every single day of our lives.

A recent online article by cosmopolitan.com revealed that the new hot look is long, flowing locks. So, for women who’ve adopted a short and sassy ‘do, hair extensions are the obvious way to get that long hairdo. For the most part, hair extensions are easy to maintain, natural looking and can be styled as simply as real hair.
However…

http://juicefairy.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/spearskudospix_300x350.jpg

…it’s entirely possible to have a total “oopsie” moment and completely destroy your look and style. Exhibit A: our beloved Britney Spears who, after taking a razor to her head in 2007, has sported extensions ever since her hair began to grow out a little. For the most part, Brit has maintained her hairstyles and kept her extensions looking natural. But this photo clearly shows that a little too much wear and tear has been placed on her hair, and she had a slip-up in the regular maintenance and care that’s required of extensions. Since they’re placed in hair and not attached to one’s head like normal hair, constant stress on extensions can lead to some…well, just take a look at BritBrit’s Kodak moment above.

On the other hand…

http://www.haircutshairstyles.com/img/photos/full/2009-02/ashley_greene_long_curly_hairstyle175.jpg

…Ashley Greene knows how to do extensions right. First, they’re neatly hidden and blend in too well with the rest of her hair–so well, in fact, that I wasn’t even aware Ashley had extensions! She definitely exemplifies regular hair care and extension maintenance, as well as a natural hairstyle that compliments her nicely. If you’re going to do extensions, this is definitely how you want to do them. Remember, when it comes to hair, it’s all about having a natural and healthy look. Extensions are just that: an extension of your hair. So, colors that don’t match your hair color or completely noticeable extensions aren’t going to get that natural look that you’re going for. And as always, changing your hairstyle is all about making yourself happy and feeling comfortable and bold in your own skin; so if longer hair is the change you want to make, extensions are a great way to get the new, fun look you’re going for!
